Edward tells Markham about the Conference at Baltimore was for the convience of the eastern comrades to attend. But now Markham will not be able to attent himself. It seems that there was a lot of time and money spent to organize this conference and Edward seems upset.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
